October 1967, almost 100,000 gathered to protest against America’s involvement in Vietnam & hoped to shut down the already 10-year-long war, even if just for the day.
It was at this peace rally that a photographer spotted a young girl, offering the 2500 rifle-wielding soldiers a flower as a gesture of love & peace.. & unknowingly acting as a reminder of how pure & empathic we truly have the capacity to be.
Although her name wasn’t recorded until 30 years later, the photo capturing Jan Rose Kasmir’s kind act that day quickly resulted in becoming one of the ‘most iconic images of the Vietnam War resistance’ & the Flower Child became a worldwide symbol of the pacifist & flower power movement.
The empathy she felt for her adversary, her strength to remain true to her morals in a time brewing with deceit & follow her heart instead of society’s orders & her courage in a world where the easy but wrong beckoning path is tread too often.. all have a poetic & profound purity to them which inspired & ignited hope within thousands, worldwide.
Fast forward to 3 years ago..
I found myself standing in the Vietnamese War Museum, feeling my faith in humanity fading fast..
Surrounded by the wickedest memorabilia born out of vicious inhumane acts humans had done & had done to them, I was on the verge of walking out. Genuinely unsure how much more I could handle & then I saw...

Instantly; my faith renewed & I was reminded that although there’s sometimes wickedness, corruption & brutalities orchestrated in our world, if we look hard enough there’s actually unquestionably SO MUCH MORE kindness, loyalty & love to effortlessly outweigh the deceit 🌸
With zero expectancy of a reply, I researched Ms.Kasmir & contacted her. I thanked her for being the silver lining of my experience, feeling it important she knew for sure that her act that day is still impacting people now, over 50 years later...

SHOCKINGLY, NOT ONLY DID I RECEIVE A REPLY & IN TURN, A FRIENDSHIP..
BUT I DISCOVERED THE WORLD ALMOST ENTIRELY FORGOT TO ENSURE SHE RECEIVED ANY OF HER DUE ACCREDITATION. TIME HAD MANAGED TO RUSH ON BY & THE STORY OF HER INSPIRING ACT OF SHEER KINDNESS WAS CLOSE TO LOST..
A beautiful beacon of much-needed light & hope in an exceptionally dark time laced with uncertainty & fear.. Someone who’s crusade against injustice encouraged the replacement of doubt & dread in the hearts of many with compassion & faith..
Unfairly hadn’t the security we all hope to have in our 70’s.
Her act helped & brought hope to thousands & the photographer who captured the profoundly pure moment went on to win awards & obtained much deserved credit & the photo became known to have helped turn US public opinion against the Vietnam war. But, the Flower Child herself, whose act it was, had & has been vastly & inexcusably overlooked.
The merit she’s acquired in comparison to the amount she’d have if this happened in a social-media-savvy era, is dramatically & unfairly less.
WE ALL WISH TO HAVE SECURITY IN OUR LATER YEARS & WE DESERVE IT..
